LSU’s 2014\u00a0super recruit Leonard Fournette has been favorably\u00a0compared to\u00a0several\u00a0of the SEC’s all-time\u00a0great running backs.\u00a0 How can Fournette possibly be compared to the\u00a0likes of Bo Jackson or Herschel Walker when he hasn’t even played a down of SEC-ball?\u00a0 Is it\u00a0even fair?\u00a0\u00a0Not really.\u00a0 Can he even be compared with Georgia’s current stud running back Todd Gurley or last year’s leading SEC rusher, Auburn’s Tre Mason?\u00a0 In football terms of course not because we don’t know enough yet.\u00a0 If we consider 1,000\u00a0rushing yards in a season\u00a0a success,\u00a0in the SEC,\u00a0then Fournette more than likely has the ability to do that and then some…as\u00a0Arkansas’s freshman back Alex Collins’\u00a0had 1,026 yards\u00a0last year.\u00a0 Collins\u00a0is a quite a talent in his own right and a heck of an athlete.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

That said can Fournette come close to being in the mold of Jackson or Walker?\u00a0 Again, we don’t know yet\u00a0BUT from a size, weight, speed and power aspect (see our Player Athletic Index<\/strong><\/a> for more on this)\u00a0Fournette compares favorably to both of them.\u00a0 Consider that Fournette is listed at 6’01 and 225-230lbs which would make him\u00a0roughly the\u00a0same height and actually a bit heavier than either Jackson or Walker coming out of high school, assuming their high school data in old media guides\u00a0is fairly accurate.\u00a0 Fournette is quite a bit heavier than either Mason or Gurley coming out of high school.\u00a0 So Fournette’s size\u00a0compares favorably or better with all the\u00a0other backs.\u00a0 And his YouTube<\/a> highlights?\u00a0 They’re spectacular!<\/p>\n

What about 40-yard dash speed?\u00a0 Well, does anyone know Bo Jackson’s or Herschel Walker’s\u00a0high school 40 time?\u00a0 I don’t.\u00a0 Send it to me please, if you do!\u00a0 Given that we don’t really know we should look\u00a0at\u00a0far more reliable speed numbers – track data.\u00a0 And there too Fournette, despite his size, compares well.\u00a0 He ran a\u00a0well documented and referenced 10.68 fully-automatic 100 meters.\u00a0 I’m more impressed by\u00a0Fournette’s 6.55 in the 55 meters at 225+, that means he must run a pretty fast 40!\u00a0 Bo ran a 10.44 equivalent (probably closer to 10.5-10.6) in high school at 215-220lbs, and Herschel ran\u00a0in the\u00a010.5 range as well.<\/p>\n

Not to be overlooked, Todd Gurley was a spectacular hurdler in high school running a 13.66 in the\u00a0110 highs.\u00a0 RGIII ran a 13.55 best in the 110 high\u00a0hurdles to give perspective to Gurley’s feat.\u00a0 And Gurley was over 200lbs in high\u00a0school.\u00a0 Additionally, Gurley ran 10.70 in\u00a0the 100 meters which indicates home-run type speed just like Jackson, Walker and Fournette.\u00a0 Lastly, while Tre Mason might not have had the 100 meter speed or size\u00a0of any of those guys, he did have a solid basketball background, ran a leg on a 400 relay team with a best of\u00a042.42, and long jump 21’08 and high jumped 6’02.<\/p>\n
