Field Coach at Plainfield North High School.\u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freelapusa.com\/?s=13+things\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span color=\"#0066cc\">full article<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0can be\u00a0viewed on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freelapusa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span color=\"#0066cc\">Freelap.com<\/span><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0Coach Holler was gracious enough to allow us\u00a0to use his article and viewpoints\u00a0here and to\u00a0expand it some more with additional\u00a0football references.\u00a0\u00a0TrackingFootball would like to thank him again\u00a0and\u00a0please take a look at one of his other articles which has generated\u00a0almost 5K shares on social media and over 20,000 views <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freelapusa.com\/10-reasons-to-join-the-track-team\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span color=\"#0066cc\">\u201910 Reasons to Join the Track\u00a0Team\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Part One of this blog series we looked at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tfootballstg.wpengine.com\/blog\/13-track-field-events-quantify-football-power-speed-part\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indoor Track, the 100 and 40 yard dash<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0This time\u00a0we will focus on the 200 and 400 meter sprints and how they relate to quantifying football speed.\u00a0 Both of these events are run competitively indoor as well but at the high school\u00a0level are primarily outdoor events.\u00a0 Because many high school football players are either participating in other winter sports or focusing on out-of-season weight training and agilities we&#8217;ll focus on the outdoor\u00a0season aspect\u00a0of these events. <\/p>\n<p>All comments, insights and pics\u00a0below are Coach Tony Holler\u2019s unless noted.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/No-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"112\" height=\"150\" class=\" size-full wp-image-805 alignleft\" alt=\"No 2\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/No-2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>200 METER DASH<\/strong> \u2026 The 200 is usually won by the same guys that win the 100.\u00a0 I do believe that wide receivers may be better in the 200, while running backs and DBs are better in the 100.\u00a0 Stride length and efficiency are at more of a premium in the 200.\u00a0 FAT timing and wind are also factors in 200 times.\u00a0 By the way, to convert hand-held times to FAT, simply round-up to the tenth, then add 0.24.\u00a0 For example, if you time someone at 22.33, round-up to 22.40 then add 0.24 to get 22.64.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_806\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tfootballstg.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/200m.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-806\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-806\" alt=\"DeAndrew White #2 ran 21.18 in the 200 meters\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/200m-300x209.jpg\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-806\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DeAndrew White #2 ran 21.18 in the 200 meters<\/p><\/div>\n<p>What is fast in the 200 meters?\u00a0 If a freshmen in high school runs under 23.0, he is elite.\u00a0 If a varsity athlete runs under 22.00, he is also a freak in football.\u00a0 Our FAT school record is 22.00.\u00a0 Our state meet was won by a young phenom, Kahmari Montgomery, from nearby Plainfield Central.\u00a0 His time was a blazing 21.25.\u00a0 Alabama\u2019s roster includes a 21.18, 21.25, and 21.51.\u00a0 Eight guys on the Alabama roster would be 200 meter record holders at Plainfield North.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>TrackingFootball says<\/strong>: <span style=\"color: #000000;\">The 200 is another pure speed event often won by sprinters that are good in the 100.\u00a0 The wrinkle with the 200 is sprinters must run a curve and have a bit more body control and endurance.\u00a0 So it does not replicate the 40 yard dash the way other straight-line events the 55, 60 and 100 do.\u00a0 Still, the 200 does offer some insight\u00a0 on pure speed and the level of speed endurance.\u00a0As\u00a0Coach Holler\u00a0pointed out, anything in the 22.00 FAT range is\u00a0great for a\u00a0high school sprinter.\u00a0He&#8217;s correct in that football\u00a0skill players, like taller\u00a0wide receivers, or those with longer stride patterns can have an advantage in the 200.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #000000;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Players with verifiable\u00a0200\u00a0speed\u00a0that translated to the NFL:<\/strong><\/span><br \/><em><br \/><strong>Randy Moss<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; speaking of wide receivers, was a state champion 200 meter sprinter as a sophomore in 21.95 and held\u00a0 the Marshall University Indoor Record in the 200 at 21.15 (1997).\u00a0 <br \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><em>Eric Dickerson<\/em> <\/strong>&#8211; 21.50 \/ 200\u00a0state champion at Sealy HS in Texas<br \/><strong><em>Flipper Anderson<\/em> <\/strong>&#8211; state champion 100 &amp;\u00a0200 sprinter in New\u00a0Jersey<br \/><strong><em>Curtis Conway<\/em> <\/strong>&#8211; state champion 100 &amp; 200 in California<br \/><em><strong>Lester Hayes<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; Former Oakland Raider great cornerback&#8230;state champion 220 yards in Texas <br \/><strong><em>Eddie Kennison<\/em><\/strong><br \/><strong><em>Randal Hill<br \/>Jermaine Lewis<\/em><\/strong><br \/><strong><em>Jacques Reeves<\/em><\/strong><br \/><strong><em>Mark Duper<\/em><\/strong><br \/><em><strong>Joey Galloway<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; state champion 100 &amp; 200 in Ohio <br \/><em><strong>Terrance Newman<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; state champion\u00a0100, 200 &amp; 400 in Kansas and 21.17 \/ 200 at Kansas State<br \/><strong><em>Zach Brown<\/em> <\/strong>&#8211; Current\u00a0LB for the NFL Titans was state champion 10.67 \/ 100 and 21.52 \/ 200 meters in Maryland\u00a0<br \/><em><strong>Devery Henderson<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0&#8211; 21.41 \/ 200 state champion in Louisiana<em>\u00a0<br \/><strong>Eric Berry<\/strong> &#8211; <\/em>Current safety\u00a0for the NFL KC Chiefs was state runner-up in 200 with bests of 21.44<br \/>to name just a few of the thousands more that can be <a href=\"https:\/\/tfootballstg.wpengine.com\/subscribe\/free\/\" target=\"_blank\">seen here<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/No.3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"112\" height=\"150\" class=\" size-full wp-image-807 alignleft\" alt=\"No.3\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/No.3.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>400 METER DASH<\/strong> \u2026 The 400 is a long sprint and a test of speed, efficiency, and a top-flight training program.\u00a0 Unlike the 100, the 400 is not as popular with football players.\u00a0 38% of Alabama\u2019s players ran the 100 in high school, only 10% ran the 400.\u00a0 If a freshmen in high school runs under 52.00, he is a star.\u00a0 If a varsity athlete runs under 49.00, he is elite.\u00a0 Our school record is 48.44.\u00a0 Kahmari Montgomery, the 200 champ in Illinois, also won the 400 (46.82).\u00a0 2014 Alabama recruit Marlon Humphrey ran 47.30.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>TrackingFootball says<\/strong>:<\/span> The 400 is a very tough sprinting event because it taxes both the anaerobic and aerobic systems.\u00a0 What this event lacks in pure football speed extrapolation it makes up for in the intangibles area, like\u00a0sprinting\u00a0an entire lap in\u00a0all kinds of wind and weather conditions.\u00a0 An athlete has to want to be good at the 400 because\u00a0it requires training,\u00a0courage and\u00a0effort.\u00a0 There are some parallels to\u00a0wrestling and\u00a0football in terms of mentality because it requires a great deal of toughness to run the 400.\u00a0 As Coach Holler mentions above, 49.00 is very good for a high school athlete.\u00a0 Very few high school\u00a0athletes can just go out on the track and drop a 49 without training and effort.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Still, the 400 has many many examples of football greats\u00a0running the\u00a0event at high levels,\u00a0particularly in high school.\u00a0 There are lots of stories about NFL\u00a0linebackers and ends that ran the &#8220;quarter mile&#8221; in high school and ran it well.\u00a0 This event isn&#8217;t necessarily\u00a0for pure sprinters and\u00a0it will make any athlete that trains for it and runs it tougher.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" color=\"#000000\">Players with verifiable\u00a0400\u00a0speed\u00a0that translated to the NFL:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>One of best examples of great football players that ran the 400 in high\u00a0school was\u00a0former Minnesota Viking and Ohio State RB, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elevenwarriors.com\/ohio-state-football\/2014\/07\/37215\/an-interview-with-ohio-state-great-robert-smith\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Smith<\/a>.\u00a0 Smith ran the 400 in sub-47 while at Euclid HS in\u00a0Ohio.\u00a0 In addition,\u00a0Smith was a state champion 100 meter sprinter and 4&#215;400 relay NCAA champion at Ohio State.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_808\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Robert-Smith.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-808\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"140\" height=\"188\" class=\" wp-image-808\" alt=\"Photo Credit: Getty Images - Robert Smith and Ohio State University in no way are affiliated with or endorse this site\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Robert-Smith.png\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-808\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Credit: Getty Images &#8211; Current Seahawk special teamer and receiver was 48.78 \/ 400 state champion in Georgia<br \/><em><strong>Antonio Cromartie<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; Current Cardinals cornerback was 46.39 \/ 400 sprinter at FSU<br \/><em><strong>Nolan Cromwell<\/strong> <\/em>&#8211; Former Rams\u00a0great was 48.9 \/ 440 state champion and ran on very fast mile relay at Kansas U.<br \/><em><strong>Santonio Holmes<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; Former Steelers and Jets receiver was sub-50 400 sprinter and state meet qualifier\u00a0in Florida<br \/><em><strong>Cris Dishman<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; Former Purdue and Houston Oiler cornerback was sub-48 400 state champion in Kentucky<br \/><em><strong>Pat Johnson<\/strong> <\/em>&#8211; Former Oregon Duck and Ravens receiver ran sub-45 400 at Oregon <br \/><strong><em>David Gettis<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; Current\u00a0NFL receiver with Buccaneers and former high school state champion in\u00a0400 (45.84) in Cali<br \/><em><strong>Bennie Blades<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; Former Detroit Lion safety and Miami Hurricane great was 47.1 \/ 440\u00a0state champion in Florida<br \/>to name just a few of the thousands more that can be <a href=\"https:\/\/tfootballstg.wpengine.com\/subscribe\/free\/\" target=\"_blank\">seen here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another\u00a0football example of high school 400 meter speed was former West Virginia and\u00a0Raiders receiver \/ kick returner,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/1993-10-29\/sports\/sp-51031_1_james-jett\" target=\"_blank\">James Jett<\/a>.\u00a0 Jett was a state champion 400 meter sprinter (47.72) in\u00a0addition to winning the 100 and 200.\u00a0\u00a0He was\u00a0a Gold Medal winner at the 1992\u00a0Olympics in the\u00a0400 relay, he was <em>extremely<\/em> fast!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_809\" style=\"width: 192px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Jett-2.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-809\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"182\" height=\"276\" class=\"size-full wp-image-809\" alt=\"Photo Credit: TheRichest.com James Jett - Barcelona Olympics\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Jett-2.png\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-809\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Credit: TheRichest.com James Jett &#8211;
